“Touched by Angels” is a new novel from Jane Ingram. This is an historical novel about this very important event at the start of the Second World War when 3 1/2 million people were evacuated from many of the large cities in England, especially London, of which over two million children were sent to homes of strangers to keep them out of harm’s way if the Luftwaffe bombed the cities. And of course they did.

This book is about three children from different class backgrounds, who probably would never meet under normal circumstances but come together on the train leading north to the Yorkshire Dales.

The book includes historical information which is chronologically correct woven into the story. The war lasts for five and a half years.

Imagine coming from a large urban city and then ending up on an isolated farm, learning to milk cows and do the chores necessary to keep the farm going during the war.

Alongside the children are two young women from London who are in the Women’s Land Army, the forces who worked on the farm to replace the labor of the men who went off to war.

This is a touching story about the three children, how they cope with being away from their families, how they adjust to their new families and how they bond with each other.

This is the second novel written by Jane Ingram. Her first book, Christa, is about an eight year old girl whose father is an army officer in the Third Reich but is killed in front of her by the SS because he didn’t agree with Hitler’s policies on exposing and exterminating Jews in Berlin. This is the story of a non-Jew who suffers as much as a Jew, and how she survived.
